Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) has added a new vessel to its fleet, naming it MV Banglar Nobojatra, previously known as XCL Lion.
According to BSC sources, the official delivery of the vessel was completed on Monday (January 27). The ownership transfer took place through a formal closing process at 8:19am London time (2:19pm Bangladesh time) at the office of the seller’s legal counsel, Stephenson Harwood LLP, representing Hellenic Dry Bulk Ventures LLC.
BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek, representatives from the Ministry of Shipping, Project Director Captain Jamal Hossain Talukder, General Manager (Insurance and Claims) Md Ahsan-ul-Karim, and General Manager (Accounts) Md Azamgir were present at the closing ceremony on behalf of BSC. At the same time, BSC Executive Director (Commercial) Muhammad Anwar Pasha, along with representatives of the Ministry of Shipping, General Manager (Administration), General Manager (Ship Repair), the ship’s master, chief engineer and other crew members, joined the event online from Nanyang Shipyard in China. Officials and employees from BSC headquarters in Chattogram, led by Executive Director (Technical) Engineer Mohammad Yousuf, also participated virtually.
Speaking on the occasion, Commodore Mahmudul Malek said the physical delivery of the vessel will be completed on January 29 at Jingjiang Nanyang Shipbuilding Co Ltd in China, as per the contract. After delivery, the ship will be deployed directly into commercial cargo operations.
Under the agreement, the price of each vessel is $38.349 million, with the total cost of the two ships amounting to $76.698 million—about 4.6 percent lower than the official estimated price of $80.40 million.
BSC officials said the vessels are modern in design, fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. Built in compliance with international environmental standards, the ships are equipped with high-quality European and Japanese machinery and components, the managing director added.
Earlier, the first vessel under the project, MV Banglar Progoti (formerly XCL Gemini), was delivered from the same shipyard in October last year and is currently engaged in commercial operations.
