A businessman was injured in a violent attack by assailants in the New Market area of Cumilla city on Tuesday night.
The injured, identified as Md Suman Bhuiyan, was attacked around 10:30pm, according to witnesses and family members.
They said a group of attackers armed with sharp weapons assaulted Suman, stabbing him and also punching and kicking him indiscriminately. Hearing his screams, local people rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee.
Suman was first taken to a local hospital by ambulance, where he received primary treatment. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Speaking from the hospital, Suman said he has been running a clothing business at New Market for a long time with a good reputation. He claimed that a dispute with a neighbouring shop owner arose recently following the growth of his business.
Alleging involvement of hired criminals, Suman said the attack was carried out due to the long-standing business rivalry. He further alleged that his shop was later broken into and some goods were looted.
However, he said he has not yet filed a case as the accused businessman is influential.
Contacted, Anwarul Azim, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, said no written complaint has been received so far. “Legal action will be taken once a complaint is filed,” he added.
